BBC UK - Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle's new film based on a rags-to-riches tale of an Indian slum boy. This actually happened. A guy from slum got a chance in India's version of Who wants to be a millionaire. He started giving all answers very correct. The show host and producers said educated and rich people from high society were not able to answer tough question than how come a guy from slum answering. So they got him arrested at the end of first day of show saying he might be cheating. He was beaten by the police and was told to get out of the show the next day by giving wrong answer.

Like his protagonist, a gutsy 18-year-old slum boy who is on the verge of winning 20 million rupees (about $400,000) in a popular TV quiz show, Danny Boyle has hit an unlikely jackpot with Slumdog Millionaire. 
And much like Jamal, a child who nobody believes could get this far on the TV show without cheating, Boyle is being roasted by some critics for taking an easy shortcut and "using" poverty to serve up a we-are-poor-but-we-are-happy story. 

Poverty, like a lot of things, is good business in a free market. But India is also exceedingly cruel to its poor and callous towards its children, and is one of the most unequal societies in the world.

Slumdog proves - like many films - that globalisation has largely failed to make cultures understand each other better. Because Indian cinema is synonymous with feckless Bollywood fare to many in the West, a vast body of critically acclaimed and often, popular, work which has consistently exposed India's underbelly with more ferocity and vigour than any foreign film is routinely ignored. 
Remember Satyajit Ray, India's only Oscar-winning filmmaker - derided in his own country as a pedlar of poverty - and his early work based in famished Indian villages.

"Slumdog Millionaire" is based on the novel "Q&A" by Vikas Swarup. It's about a young man named Jamal who, as the film begins, is one question away from the grand prize on the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" But how did this poor orphan get so far on the seemingly impossible game show?

Microsoft to cut 5,000 jobs as profits fall

 Microsoft Corp. today said it will cut 5,000 jobs amid falling profits. About 1,400 positions were eliminated today.

The job cuts come as the company announced that fourth quarter profits fell 11% to $4.17 billion. Revenue rose 2% to $17.08 million.

The company said it plans to cut jobs in research and development, marketing, sales, finance, legal, human resources and IT over the next 18 months. The first 1,400 jobs will be cut on Thursday.

Microsoft projected that the job cuts will trim its annual operating expense run rate by $1.5 billion and reduce its fiscal 2009 capital expenditures by $700 million.

The layoffs are being implemented due to IT spending that fell lower than the company's expectations for the quarter. Microsoft said in a statement that it "acted quickly" to reduce its costs.

Microsoft warned that its revenue and earnings for the second half of the year relative to the previous year will be "almost certainly" lower.

The company said it can't provide quantitative revenue and earnings-per-share guidance for the rest of the year due to "the volatility of market conditions."

After the results were announced, Microsoft's share price fell to around $18.05, down $1.31 in early-morning trading.

Software client revenue fell 8 percent, as PC sales slumped and buyers turned to low-cost netbooks, the company said. Annual software license fees pushed server and software tool revenue up 15 percent, while entertainment and devices revenue grew 3 percent on the back of holiday demand for the Xbox game console.

Rajinikanth: "Maapilai, I’m proud of you"

Superstar Rajinikanth saw a special screening of his son-in-law Dhanush's Padikkathavan on Tuesday evening at Four Frames preview theatre in Chennai.

He was to see it earlier but it did not work out as he was caught up with Endhiran shoot. Rajini was also eager because the title itself was borrowed from an earlier hit he had done.

Slumdog, Rahman sweep Oscar nominations

Director Danny Boyle’s Golden Globe-winning Slumdog Millionaire – a story based on Mumbai slums – has been nominated in five categories for the Academy Awards to be announced in February 2009.

Slumdog has been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy), Best Picture, Best Original Score (A R Rahman), Best Song (One each for Jai Ho and O Saya), Best editing, Best Sound Mixing (Resul Pookutty), Best Sound Editing (Resul Pookutty), Best Cinematography and Best Director (Danny Boyle) at the Oscars.

Slumdog Millionare has already bagged four coveted Golden Globes and multiple Bafta nominations.

Other Oscar hopefuls this year are - Double golden globe winner Kate Winslet for her role in both Revolutionary Road and The Reader, Meryl Streep for Doubt, Brad Pitt for The curious case of Benjamin Button and Sean Penn for his portrayal of gay political activist Harvey Milk in Milk. Frost/Nixon, Mickey Rourke-starrer The Wrestler and Angelina Jolie's Changeling are the other key contenders.

Chemical processes that lead to ageing identified

Scientists claim to have taken a step closer to creating an elixir of youth by identifying the chemical processes that lead to ageing.

   

An international team has found two connected chemical triggers which influence each other and regulate the lifespan of cells, and that manipulating their relative availability in the body can increase longevity and reduce signs of ageing. 

In fact, the study, led by Stanford University, builds on the growing belief that age-related degeneration of tissues or organs or facial skin is an active and deliberate process by the body rather than a gradual failure of tired cells.

The team has found two proteins that seem to directly affect ageing. One known as SIRT6 which protects against cell ageing and the other NF Kappa B  which promotes it, The Daily Telegraph reported.

    

According to the scientists, individuals naturally have different mixes of substances in their bodies and this is why some people are genetically destined to live longer.

Stanford University's Prof Dr Howard Chang, who led the team, was quoted by the leading British daily as saying: 'There is a genetic process that has to be on, and enforced, in order for ageing to happen.'

'It's possible that those rare individuals who live beyond 100 years have a less-efficient version of this master pathway just as kids with progeria  a genetic ageing disease  may have components of this pathway that are more active.'

In fact, the scientists have based their findings on an experiment on laboratory rodents. It focused on two sets of mice one of which was bred to be deficient of SIRT6, and a second set of elderly mice which had the activity of the NF Kappa B blocked.

They found that the first set aged rapidly and died after just four weeks due to an increase of the NF Kappa B in the system. And, suppressing the latter reversed the ageing process. Similarly in the second set of mice it was found that when NF Kappa was subdued they looked and acted younger.

'It seems an important job of SIRT6 is to restrain NF Kappa B and limit the expression of genes associated with ageing,' Dr Chang wrote in the latest edition of the Cell journal.

Villu-My Review(1.5\5)

Got an evening show ticket to watch this Movie. Let’s first get things straight: Villu is Prabhu Deva’s version of the Hindi box office hit Soldier. It dawns on you as the movie progresses and sadly when your next seat neighbor is an over-enthusiastic bloke who can’t help but revealing the incidents of Soldier in correlation with Villu, you have no choice other than to blame your stars (as in, astrological ones). Having said that, we do not mean Prabhu Deva made a good adaptation of Soldier – not that if he attempted it, things would’ve been any better. With tacky production values, shabby cinematography and amateurish direction Villu comes across as a more than two-hour long torment that only less people deserve – those who have committed some unpardonable crime, perhaps.

Prabhu Deva cannot be excused in a lifetime for conceiving Vijay’s scarecrow entry – it happens in a laundry place and Vijay flies across and lands gathering all the lengthy and colorful garments entwined on his body making him look no less than a scarecrow. Thankfully enough, Vijay does not have too many punch dialogues though – this time around he attempts to impress his fans using his antics in fights and gathering sentiments. That’s not to mention that his dialogues double up to serve the purpose of punch one liners. And there are these amateur stunt scenes – Vijay emerges unscathed invariably in all of them. In land, water and on air, that is. He also plays a double role of that of a father and a son. And with that Prabhu Deva has successfully made the army operations appear as if it were a one-man-attempt. And the atrocious dialogue – that the only benefit of being in the army is the subsidized liquor – is inexcusable.

Villu’s story is reminiscent of the prehistoric Tamil cinema formulas – son taking revenge over his father’s killers to satiate his mother’s wishes. And of course, there is time for love, double crossing, comedy and some sentiments in the midst.

Nayan’s presence serves the purpose of eye candy – she wears micro minis (she even asks you so in one of the songs), bras disguised as tops, dangerously low skirts and spaghetti tops. Whatever happened to that naïve and talented girl of Ayya and Manasinakkara? Although Vadivelu’s unimaginative comedy track (yes, the track has absolutely no connection whatsoever with the movie’s main plot) is boisterous and loud, it serves as a saving grace for the movie in many instances.

Prakash Raj, Anandraj, Manoj K Jeyan, Geetha, Ranjitha and Pandu’s roles are shoddily developed. The atrociously plump Kushboo ends up performing the title item number, partly voiced by Kovai Sarala. Now that reminds us of the forgettable music – except for a couple of songs that could be favored by the front benchers, the music and rerecording are largely intolerable.

A separate review could be written about Ravi Varman’s cinematography. The frames appear hazed

even in the foreign locales. In many scenes where a chase sequence is in progress, the images become pixilated, making one wonder about the poor production values. For all these reasons Villu, in all probability, could even tire out the loyal fans. Verdict – Not worth risking your patience!

2008's top 10 movies

The American Film Institute has named 'The Dark Knight' as one of the Top 10 movies of 2008.

Others in the list are political biopic 'Milk', animated fantasy 'Wall-E' and Brad Pitt's 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'.

Alongside the independent dramas 'Frozen River' and 'Wendy and Lucy', Clint Eastwood's 'Gran Torino' and comic book blockbuster 'Iron Man' also feature, reports BBC.

The list, which has been compiled by a panel of filmmakers, reviewers and academics, has been completed by 'Frost/Nixon' and 'The Wrestler'.

Unlike other awards bodies, the institute does not rank films or pick one as the year's best.

The filmmakers behind the AFI's Top 10 choices will be honoured at a luncheon on 9 January.

World Bank blacklisted Wipro Also

The World Bank on Sunday said it plans to publish in the future the names of all companies it bans from doing work with the poverty-fighting institution, and immediately listed three Indian companies.

The Bank said the move aligns its disclosure practices for companies involved in wrongdoing that work on development projects financed by the World Bank and those that provide goods and services directly to the institution.

"This change was made in the interest of fairness and transparency," the Washington-based lender said in a statement.

Until now, the World Bank has only published the names of debarred companies involved in Bank-financed projects, but has not listed blacklisted firms that receive direct contracts from the institution under its corporate procurement program.

"There are currently three companies that have been debarred along with their affiliates under the Bank Group's corporate procurement program," the Bank said.

It said it debarred Satyam Computer Services, India's fourth-largest software company, for eight years in September 2008, and Wipro Technologies, India's No. 3 software company, for four years in June 2007 both for "improper benefits to bank staff".

In addition, it said it had also barred India's Megasoft Consultants for four years in December 2007 for "participating in a joint venture with Bank staff while conducting business with the Bank".

All three companies were involved in different contracts and their debarments are not related.

The World Bank has long been under pressure to step up its fight again fraud and corruption within the institution and in projects it finances in developing countries.

Satyam's chairman and founder Ramalinga Raju resigned last week after revealing years of accounting fraud in India's biggest corporate fraud. Raju admitted last week that about $1 billion, or 94 percent of the cash on the company's books was fictitious.

The World Bank acknowledged only in December it had debarred Satyam following press reports that the company had been blacklisted three months earlier for "improper benefits" given to Bank officials.

In Mumbai, Wipro Ltd said in a statement its revenues from the World Bank were insignificant and the decision by the Bank to bar it would not affect business and earnings.

Shares in Wipro fell more than 12 percent after the World Bank said it had barred the company from its direct contracts.

Villu's release announced

                                 Vijay's Pongal release Villu recently went through the censor scissors and escaped majorly unscathed with a UA certificate. According to sources, the movie was viewed by censor officials on Saturday the January 3rd. It is also learnt that the movie will be released on January 12th, a couple of days ahead of Pongal to enable it to cash in on the holiday season.



                           Villu is directed by Prabhu Deva, who is also behind Vijay's hit flick Pokkiri. The movie will also be crucial to Nayan's existence who is desperate for a hit after delivering two fiascos back to back. Villu is scored by the Telugu music director Devi Sri Prasad.

                                 Based on the buzz from the sets, Vijay, in a lighter vein, quipped that he was relieved that the cameo played by Prabu Deva in the movie was not that of a dance master –because that would mean the character Vijay plays in Villu would have to learn tough steps! Besides, the comedy track, written by Prabhu Deva had even Vadivelu in splits in the sets, insiders swear. 

Paparazzi doesn't let Rajini & Ash alone!

             The Rajinikanth starrer Endhiran is progressing very well amidst mounting expectations. Ever since the film commenced, the entire Indian film industry is keen watching the developments. To make matters even interesting, Endhiran has Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starring opposite the Superstar. 



                             Only recently, the production rights of this film were purchased by Sun Pictures from the original producers Eros International and Ayngaran. Being a mega budget film, the producers and director Shankar wanted every bit of privacy during the film shoot and they also took extra care to ensure the photos from the shooting are not leaked out. But with the latest technology rearing its ugly head we saw a few of the photos shot during the Endhiran shooting in Peru and Goa find its way to the internet. 

                     To top all this, the local paparazzi in Vellore have shot a few stills while the film unit was busy shooting at the Vellore Institute of Technology. Shankar naturally is fuming over this and is now said to working out a new strategy to prevent such things in future. 

Why Padikathavan was not publicized?

Sun Pictures has acquired the Dhanush starrer Padikathavan! A unit of Sun TV Network, Sun Pictures, forayed into the film industry in a big way with the massive success of Kadhalil Vizhunden. The film went on to become a huge hit, thanks to the publicity created by the Sun TV. 



Padikathavan, which was produced by Vijaya Productions, was acquired by Sun Pictures after discussions proved to be fruitful to both the parties. Insiders, however, say that it was decided well before to handover the rights to Sun Pictures and it was due to this the producers did not spend much on the promos. With Sun Pictures taking over Padikathavan, it is now assured that it will do all it can to promote the film, say our sources.
